Time for Spring Yard Maintenance
Posted March 23, 2015

Spring has arrived and although it can be a predictable month in terms of weather, it’s time to start your outside yard cleanup. Unless the ground is still saturated from recent rain or snow, start with doing a walk around to inspect your yard.

Look for tree limbs and shrubbery that may have taken a beating during the cold weather. Prune limbs and shape hedges. Summer flowering bushes should be pruned before the buds start to appear. The spring blooming bushes can be pruned after they have completely bloomed.

Perennials that flower should be cut back to a height of 4-6 inches. Cut back ornamental grass a little shorter in order to allow new growth to shoot up. When the soil thaws, thin crowded beds, leaving several stems per clump. Set the others out in places that are sparse or start a new bed. Hostas and daylilies are great examples of plants that need splitting from time to time.

Remove fallen leaves from in and around plant beds. These can smother your plants and contribute to conditions that cause diseased plants. Remove last year’s dead annuals, and remove last years faded mulch, readying it for a new layer once spring planting and maintenance is done.

Now is also a good time to apply fertilizer according to your plant needs. Square off the edges of flower beds with a shovel, removing any grass that has invaded it. It’s also a good time to check to see if your yard needs seeding and possibly crabgrass treatment.

Clean off patios and driveways with a pressure washer on low. This will get rid of leaf stains or algae spots that have accumulated over the winter. If you have flagstone, you may need to build up the sand or stone dust between them. This also goes for graveled areas that has gotten low.

Inspect fences and trellises for rotted or damaged wood. These may need only a basic cleaning or maybe sanding and a new finish coat.

Let’s get ready to enjoy the coming warmer weather.
