Multigenerational Living

Homes that have several generations living under the same roof are more common than most think. Changing demographics make it common for baby boomers (those born between 1946 and 1964) to be referred to as the “sandwich generation”, which means that they may have children living with them, elderly parents, or maybe a combination of both. It could be that more boomers have taken the responsibility of caring for elderly relatives in their home. It could be a case in which a child returns home temporarily, maybe in transition after finishing college (referred to as the boomerang child).

For reasons that may be economical or psychological, many boomers choose not to place their parents in an assisted living or nursing home unless it is the only choice. They instead choose to make their current home one that can accommodate everyone, or purchase a home that will house all generations.

Recognizing these changes as well as acknowledging consumer demands, builders have adapted by making available in built homes or floorplans the option of 1st floor bedrooms or attached apartments. In larger houses they may make available detached guest houses or living suites with kitchenettes and separate entrances.

These are options that allow family members to live independently but together. Although a house that accommodates more people will result in increased expenses, this will ideally be balanced out by the residents that are able to share in the expenses.
