House Hunting - How Men and Women Differ
Posted March 30, 2014

The majority of men and women differ when it comes to looking at houses. How you say? Well let's start at the front door and work our way to the back.

He almost always looks at the front of the house and says things like, "My riding mower could handle this yard with no problem. Wonder what I'd have to buy to wash windows that high? Where can I put Christmas light hangers?" She looks around the yard and comments, "Flowers would look perfect planted in front of this mailbox. The yard needs more bushes though, and would I really be satisfied with shutters that shade of blue?"

By this time he is in the garage, looking at how much storage space there is for his stuff. "Toolboxes over here and maybe three or four sets of shelving for this side, and I think both our vehicles would fit comfortably in here, although she would have to learn to stay on her side (last line not said out loud)."

After giving the garage the onceover, he finally comes into the house, opening his first and last door, the refrigerator door.

Inside he admires the arched entryway and high ceilings as well as the crown molding and hardwood floors inside. A man's home is his castle, remember. When he reaches the family room, his first comment is "Hey honey, where can we put the big screen television"? (that I’m planning on buying) again not said aloud. In the meantime, she opens each hallway door, looking at the space. MLS sheets measurements are nothing like looking at the real thing. She places imaginary furniture, looks around and says "I love this open space. I can see what everybody is doing". He thinks, to himself, that he loves it too because he'll be able to see the big screen TV from the refrigerator and the living room.

Time to look at bedrooms. They both agree on the larger one as theirs, and as she goes from door to door trying to decide where the kids will go, he comments that first come first served is ok with him and heads for the back yard. She imagines trees lining the eventual fence, giving some privacy from neighbors where currently there is none. He says it’s a good yard because its flat and it’ll be a straight mow. She sees a quiet fenced in porch, he sees a large grill on the open patio. If this is the house they’ll save this discussion for later.

One last thing. We all know men and women look for the qualities that best suit their needs when looking at homes. And although this blog was written in jest, there may be just a little bit of truth in it. What do you think?
