Furniture Shopping for the Frugal
Posted June 05, 2014

Moving into a new home furnished with brand new furniture would be great, but for the average homebuyer it's probably not very realistic. Although it may not be the ideal time to purchase all the new furniture you'd like, there are some economical ways to help you get started.

Ignore furniture store sales, except when it comes to floor samples. This doesn't mean don't shop. It's just that the same sale items advertised can probably be had at the same price any day of the week. If you are really interested in an item, follow it on the store website for price reductions. It's said that the best time of the year for good deals on furniture are around Memorial Day, Veterans Day, 4th of July and Christmas.

We've all driven by that furniture store that continuously displays the big Going Out of Business sign. How many times can a store go out of business? The majority of the time this is just a ploy to get you in the store.

The furniture store that offers 0% down most likely builds the cost of financing into the upfront cost. In that situation, take into consideration the quality and cost of what you're looking to buy and then decide whether it's really worth it.

If you have the patience to do the research and roadwork you may be able to find quality used furniture at places like estate sales, so don't rule out used.

Choose quality over quantity. Check furniture drawers and cabinets. Avoid nails and glue. Drawers that don't quite fit and doors that aren't quite right won't get better with time. Inspect the legs, check the springs and test the cushions. Wood joints at the ends and corners are better quality and bound to last longer.

Be realistic about colors. If a beautiful couch and loveseat in a really trendy color catches your eye, and it's marked down to a ridiculously low price, there's probably a reason it's still there. Would you (and your family) want to look at that "trendy color" every day for the next 5 years?

Make sure you measure the furniture you want to buy and the space at home you are putting it in. You don't want to buy furniture that won't fit through your doorways. You also want to be sure the pieces are in proportion to the areas in which they are to be placed.
