Location Matters - Finding the Right Neighborhood

Hopefully it won't take long to find the neighborhood in which your future home is located. Give your real estate agent a list of your wants and needs so that you're both looking for the same things. Keep in mind that where your home is located will determine your commute time to work, the schools your children attend and how close to shopping and other amenities you will be.

If you're looking at newer subdivisions, the lot on which the house is built will most likely be smaller than that of an older home. Do you prefer a big yard? Or maybe you prefer mowing the least amount of grass possible. Is it easy to get in and out of the neighborhood? Are there stoplights to control traffic at busy times, or will you have no choice but to just "go with the flow"? In a growing subdivision, visit the model home and ask how many houses are to be built. Also pick up brochures on available house plans, giving yourself time to compare with your own needs when you get home.

One way to get a good "overview" of the area is to log on to Zillow.com, put in the street and city, and look at the overhead as well as the street view. You can look at the proximity to major roads as well as estimated and selling prices of existing homes. Also use MapQuest to estimate mileage to other destinations and look for other route options.
