Maximizing Your Homes Curb Appeal
Posted March 12, 2014

Making the outside of a house picture perfect is the first step in getting it sold. Would-be buyers won’t want to see inside if the outside isn’t attractive. Regardless of freshly painted walls, hardwood floors and new appliances inside, they won’t make it in the door if the outside turns them off.

You’ve probably driven by a house that had zero curb appeal, making you look twice for all the wrong reasons. But you’ve also driven by the house with an immaculate yard, grass and hedges trimmed to perfection, colorful plants, flowers or bushes on display, no matter what the season. It makes a difference, and if yours isn’t quite there yet, now is the time to start.

The next time you drive up to your home, do your own evaluation. How does the front walk, driveway and landscaping look to you? Is it inviting, bushes neatly trimmed, leaves raked and grass mowed? And if it’s off season, is it still in ship-shape with bare trees waiting to sprout leaves and dormant flowers waiting for the earth to warm. (Can you tell I’m ready for spring?) Beautiful landscaping can and should be a year round thing.

Does your home exterior look neat and clean? If you have siding or brick, does it need a good pressure-washing? Or maybe it’s time for that paint job you’ve been putting off. Check the shutters, window trim, and railing to make sure they are in good shape and not in need of maintenance. Do shingles need replacing and could the windows use a good washing?

If you have outside furniture be sure that it’s comfortable and inviting. Are the numbers on your mailbox still readable? House numbers as well as the front doorknob or handle set can make the house look old, or they can present a welcoming impression to a home buyer. Think about painting the door a fresh new color.

Add color by filling planters with seasonal flowers and placing them at your front door, at the side of the garage entry and in the yard. Buy a new welcome mat.

Look in the windows. Are the curtain colors blending with the outside, or do colors clash, distracting the buyer from a great view of the front? Are curtains in need of cleaning, or maybe they should be changed altogether.

Keep items such as bicycles, toys, garbage cans and other debris out of the yard, leaving it clutter-free. Neatness outside tells a buyer that the people living there probably keep it neat on the inside too.

Remember, first impressions do matter.
