Treat Yourself to Something Special - Take a Staycation
Posted July 16, 2014

Have you already been on vacation this summer or maybe thinking about taking one? How about trying a staycation or two? Wikipedia defines a staycation as a period in which an individual or family stays home and participates in leisure activities within driving distance, sleeping in their own beds at night. Ok, so Wikipedia makes it sound kind of boring, but please read on.

Sometimes we just need some alone time, rest from a recent vacation, or maybe you're low on funds and haven't been able to go anywhere yet. A staycation (stay-at-home vacation) may be just the thing for you.

There are many things that you can do, and just a few rules to follow. Those rules include skipping those daily routines, relaxing, no housecleaning or doing laundry and no mowing or cleaning out the garage. You have to resist those household projects you routinely feel the need to do while at home.

A staycation is actually much cheaper than most vacations. No wasted days driving or flying to and from your destination, because you're already there! No boarding the pets or begging a relative to take the dog, just this once. No lodging or high ticket prices for entertainment. Did I say that you get to sleep in your own bed and even sleep late if you so desire?

Ok, so what can you do during a staycation?

Arrange to brush up on your golf or tennis.
Have a spa day or enjoy a fancy picnic.
Read a book, take a nap then see a show or a movie.
Visit your local museums, choosing whichever one appeals to your interest.
Go swimming (or learn how to swim).
Visit gyms and sign up for that membership you've been meaning to.
Go see a ballgame, take a hike, or host a barbeque or a potluck dinner.
Spend time with the kids, grandkids or your special nieces and nephews.
Get close to nature by visiting local parks or nature walks.
Catch up on your reading, or have a video watching marathon.
Meet a friend or two for lunch and catch up on old times. And don't forget to rub in the fact that they have to go back to work afterwards and you don't.
Make a day trip to local tourist sites.
Have you ever tried horseback riding or paintball?
Most of the time it involves eating out more frequently than usual, so keep your favorite restaurants, or the ones you’ve been meaning to try, in mind.

So get your calendar out and start planning! (And if you have any staycation suggestions, please share them with us.)
